Bio

Matt Smit is a barrister at Riverlands Chambers in Christchurch, practising in criminal law and youth advocacy. He was admitted to the bar in 2014 and began his legal career with the Public Defence Service, gaining extensive experience across a wide range of criminal matters. 


In 2021, Matt entered independent practice and was appointed as a youth advocate, a role that reflects his commitment to supporting young people through the justice system.


Matt has appeared in a number of complex and high-profile cases, including the Mama Hooch trial, and is known for his calm and pragmatic approach in challenging environments. He places a strong emphasis on clear and respectful communication with clients, working to ensure they feel understood and supported throughout the legal process. 


Whether representing adults or youth, Matt is focused on achieving the best possible outcome and helping clients navigate what is often a difficult and uncertain time.


Outside of work, Matt enjoys biking and spending time with his family.
