Providing expert legal advocacy in Christchurch since 1995.
A Legacy Of Legal Expertise
Founded in December 1995 by Nigel Dunlop and Rob Murfitt, Riverlands Chambers has built a strong reputation for high-quality legal representation. Over the years, we have grown into a respected collective of independent barristers, providing expert advocacy across a broad range of legal areas. Our members appear in courts and tribunals throughout New Zealand, representing clients in criminal and serious fraud matters, family and child-related litigation, civil and commercial litigation, inquests and courts martial, professional disciplinary proceedings, regulatory prosecutions and more.
Our Approach
At Riverlands Chambers, we believe in independence, integrity, and excellence in advocacy. Each of our barristers operates independently, bringing their individual expertise to their clients, while benefiting from a collaborative environment where knowledge and resources are shared. This ensures that clients receive informed, strategic representation tailored to their specific legal needs.
Resilience and Growth
The Christchurch earthquakes of 2011 tested the resilience of Riverlands Chambers. After significant damage to our Victoria Street premises, we adapted and continued our work from temporary locations before establishing a base in Riccarton where we remained for 11 years. An opportunity to move into the city arose early in 2025, along with scope to expand Riverlands Chambers and we now find ourselves two blocks from the Courthouse, in a prime position, back in the city for the first time since 2011.
Despite these challenges, and interludes caused by COVID-19, our commitment to legal excellence has never wavered, and we continue to serve the Canterbury region and beyond with the same dedication that has defined us since our founding.

A Commitment to the Legal Community
Beyond advocacy, Riverlands Chambers is actively involved in mentoring and legal education. Many of our barristers have held significant roles in the profession, and we have celebrated several judicial appointments from our number. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of legal practice and contributing to the development of the legal community in Canterbury and across New Zealand and our members are actively involved in training and mentoring young practitioners with a view to ensuring that Riverlands Chambers’ legacy remains in good hands.
Riverlands Chambers remains dedicated to delivering expert legal advice, strong advocacy, and a client-focused approach, ensuring the best possible outcomes for those we represent.
