Liz Bulger was admitted to the bar in December 1987 after completing a BA/LLB at the University of Otago. She has practised law for nearly four decades and is one of the longest-standing members of Riverlands Chambers, where she has built a respected reputation in the field of criminal law.

Liz’s practice encompasses the full spectrum of criminal matters, from defending clients in jury trials to appellate work and parole hearings. She still works in the District Court lists and conducts judge alone trials and sentencings as well as representing Defendants in courts martial and other regulatory proceedings. She has been a Youth Advocate since 2002 and is often called upon to act as Counsel to Assist in the District Court and in the High Court. She remains on the duty lawyer roster for Greymouth and is frequently called upon to fulfil Youth Advocate duties there and in Blenheim.

With more than 37 years of practice, Liz brings both a depth of knowledge and practical experience to every case she takes on. Her enthusiasm to achieve good results is well known but she also has a reputation for playing fair and striving for the best results for her clients.

Liz ‘s membership of Riverlands Chambers has contributed to its standing as one of Canterbury’s leading sets of barristers. Her long service at Chambers reflects her commitment not only to her clients but also to the collegial and professional standards of the bar. She is also a significant contributor to the profession, having served nearly 12 years as Convenor of the New Zealand Law Society Access to Justice Committee (formerly the Legal Aid Committee) and having held several other posts in local and national committees on behalf of the Law Society.

Outside of the confines of the office, Liz is married to Andrew and they live on a five acre block west of Christchurch. She enjoys travel, swimming, reading and gardening, and engaging with her dwarf border collie Ivy, who is a regular visitor to Riverlands Chambers.
