Bio

James Seaton was admitted to the bar in 2020 and joined Riverlands Chambers in 2026. Before admission, he spent over a decade working as a police officer in the New Zealand Police, with the last couple of years working for the Police Prosecution Service. He practices in criminal defence, acting for clients across a broad range of charges — including drink and drug driving, drug offences, assault and violence, family violence, dishonesty, and sexual offences.

James takes a calm, straightforward approach and is committed to explaining matters clearly, so that clients understand their options and what to expect at each stage.

As a Provider Approval Level (PAL) 3 legal aid provider, James is approved to act on most criminal matters. He accepts both legal aid and privately funded instructions. New enquiries are welcome by phone or email.

James is a member of the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Bar Association. He also serves as a committee member of the Canterbury Westland Sole Practitioners Group.
